2000 Switzerland

A delightful way to walk in Switzerland is from point to point, to “travel” on foot, as people did hundreds of years ago. Indeed, when you walk this way in Switzerland, you're often following trails that are hundreds, sometimes even thousands of years old. These paths are not made by Trail Commissions; they were created by alpine farmers to connect one village with the next, by a short (albeit arduous) route. The practice of linking together these ancient pass routes and other trails to make long- distance walking tours is at least 150 years old.

The map of Switzerland shows a big square wedge protruding southward into Italy; this is Valais, where the Swiss-Italian border runs along the peaks of the highest mountains in Switzerland, including the Matterhorn. This is the old traditional area, it is French speaking.

Uncle John is my father’s oldest brother, but this is the first time I will meet him, since he had already immigrated to Switzerland with his wife Elma when I visited Scotland as a child. Their three children, Chris, Tony and Elizabeth, were all born in Switzerland. Chris is now married to Daniela (German) and they have a teenage son Mischi. Elizabeth is married to Eric (French) and they have two young children, Julie & Vincent. We didn’t get to meet Tony on this trip. Sadly, Elma died after fighting cancer, she is a very much missed wife, mother and grandmother, and we were sorry that we never got to meet her.
