Polar Bear Jail

Here is Harold outside the Polar Bear Jail. Each bear is tagged and weighed, and then put in his own cell without food or human contact. This time of year the bears are in a walking hibernation, so not eating for a week is no hardship. The first year the town of Churchill starting jailing the bears, they fed them in jail, and then they flew them back to where they had found them. 90% of the jailed bears, came right back. Now they are not fed, and when the winds die down they will be helicoptered to the coast north-east of here, which is where they were heading, and now only 10% end up back in jail.
